As part of Kochi Public Transport Day campaign, Transport Minister A K Saseendranopted out of official transport and used various modes of public transport on May 24, 2018. The minister arrived atErnakulam South Railway Station by train at 9.45 am; he then took an autorickshaw to reach Manorama Junction from where he boarded a bus to alight at Boat Jetty bus stop on Shanmugham Road and walked to reach the Ernakulam Guest House.  The minister was in the city for the signing of agreements between Axis Bank and seven private bus operator societies to extend the Kochi-1 card to private buses.

By opting for public transport, the minister encouraged the public to do the same. Raising concerns over traffic congestion and increasing number of accidents, he asked the public to shift to a sustainable and safe mode of travel and use public transport regularly. Accompanying the minister for the ride, Dr D Dhanuraj, chairman, Centre for Public Policy Research said, “We hope what started now as one day in a month would be taken up by citizens of Kochi to use public transport instead of private vehicles.”
Kochi Public Transport Day is a year-long campaign spearheaded by Centre for Public Policy Research, various residents associations, industry bodies and civil society organizations in Kochi to promote and study public transport usage in the city. The first Friday of every month is celebrated as Kochi Public Transport Day.
