The sixth edition of Kochi Public Transport Day was held on July 6, 2018. As part of the July month observance day, Ernakulam district collector Mohammed Y Safirulla and Regional Transport Officer Jojy P Jose used public transport to understand the commuter woes of Vypin residents.

At around 8:40 am, the collector and the RTO boarded a boat from Ernakulam Boat Jetty to Vypin Boat Jetty. After arriving there at 9: 15 am, the officials took a bus ride from the private bus stand to Ernakulam High Court Junction. During the rides they interacted with commuters from Vypin to understand their transport mobility issues. They also listened to the challenges faced by the ferry and bus staff on the route.

The collector explored whether the Vypin buses terminating at High Court Junction can be extended to the city region. Both the officials also looked into the possibility of improving ferry services. “Integrating different modes of transport will be crucial in countering the mobility issues in island regions of the city, especially the waterways,” said the collector.

On reaching High Court Junction at 9:30 am, the collector attended an event organized by Kochi Metro Rail Limited and hosted by Greater Cochin Development Watch at Lalan Towers, where he honoured the most frequent metro passengers in the month of June by presenting them with the ‘Shreshtasanchari Puraskaram’.

Vypeen Action Council representatives, Greater Cochin Development Watch members, SCMS College volunteers and representatives from various resident's associations in the city also attended the event.
